Graduate in Marine Engineering (GME)
This is a 1 year conversion course that has been designed for graduates of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture looking to become Engineers on ships. The course leads to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency (CoC), awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Navy Vessels (Ships) anywhere in the world. It is the gateway for Mechanical & Naval Architecture Graduates to enter Merchant Navy.
The course focuses on technical aspects related to Marine Engineering. The curriculum for this course consists of concepts and processes involved in the manufacture, designing and operation of ship machinery and engines.

GME Jobs and Scope
A GME graduate can get hired as a marine engineer, marine surveyor, structural engineer, or coastal marine engineer.
- Marine Engineer
Designing, developing, building, installing, inspecting, and maintaining propulsion systems, engines, pumps, and other technical equipment allows boats and other maritime vessels to operate efficiently. They work on ferries, cargo ships, hovercraft, cruise liners, and military vessels, including frigates, warships, and submarines.
- Structural Engineer
Preparing reports, plans, calculating loads and stresses, selecting appropriate construction materials, offering technical advice, and obtaining planning and building regulatory permissions are all part of the job.
- Marine Sales Manager
Responsible for keeping an eye on the market and creating and maintaining constant communication with customers to ensure that they are happy. They are in charge of sales cycles and forecasting accuracy. They also produce technical suggestions and quotations and connect with customers in the field clearly and straightforwardly through professional presentations.
- Coastal Marine Engineer
Responsible for maintaining, upgrading, and operating massive vessels that transport gas and oil from production locations to their destinations. Offshore vessels use advanced technology to run heavy machinery that is used to construct structures off the shores of oil-producing countries.
- Marine Surveyor
In charge of dealing with all types of watercraft, from speedboats to ocean liners. Their duty entails inspecting and evaluating ships, fishing boats, and yachts to ensure that official classifications are adhered to. They also inspect the ships for compliance with international regulations.
After completing GME course, one can start a career in the Merchant Navy as a Marine Engineer. After relevant years of sea-service and clearing some training modules you can rise through the ranks and become a Chief Engineer.

Placement: Candidate Pursuing the Course – Will Be Provided the Placement for the Onboard Training After the Completion of the Course Successfully.
Eligibility Criteria
- Graduation in B.E or B.Tech – Mechanical / Naval Architecture / Automation Engineering with minimum marks of 50% in final year
Minimum 50% marks in English either 10th or 12th or Degree
Age Limit: Below 28 Years - Passport: It is mandatory to have passport at the time of course commencement.
Medical Standard
- Candidates should be Physically Fit for Sea Service under DGS norms
- Eyesight 6/6 with or without external aids, maximum power permitted up to ±2.5
- No Color Blindness
